Balancing the benefits and risks of steroids is vital to optimizing ocular health, and each patient's circumstances must be factored into the treatment equation. However, you may have serious withdrawal effects once your body is used to the steroids. Your gp or asthma nurse will keep an eye on your blood-sugar levels if you're taking high doses of steroids by arranging blood tests and by testing your urine for glucose. Steroids can sometimes affect diabetes, high blood pressure or epilepsy, so you'll have your blood pressure and blood sugar levels checked from time to time. Treatment for steroid abuse may include meetings with a psychologist, endocrine therapies to restore normal hormone levels, and other pharmacological treatments. Only people who have serious infections (and are not taking treatment for the infection) should not take oral steroids.
